How to record a two-person interview or podcast on your phone
You don’t need a studio to record a conversation. Two clip-on mics and one phone will get you clear, even audio, as long as you set up the room and the mics with a little care.

What you need
- One phone (or tablet) to record on.
- A clip-on mic for each person. Mini Mic Pro comes with two mics that share one receiver.
- A recording app: Voice Memos, your voice recorder, or the Camera app if you’re filming.
- Headphones for checking the test recording.
Set up the room
- Choose the softest room you have. Sofas, rugs and curtains cut echo.
- Sit close enough to talk naturally. The mics have plenty of range, but you’ll get the most reliable connection with the phone nearby and nothing big between you.
- Turn off fans, air conditioning and notifications.
Place and check the mics
- Plug the receiver into the phone and turn both mics on until each light is solid green. Each mic has its own button and battery.
- Clip each mic 6–8 inches below the wearer’s mouth, in the same spot on both people.
- Record 20 seconds of normal conversation and listen back on headphones.
- If one voice is much quieter, move that mic a little closer to the mouth. There’s no gain knob, so placement sets the level.
One track or two?
With one receiver, both mics record into a single mixed track. That’s ideal for most interviews and short videos: there’s nothing to sync.
If you need each voice on its own track for editing, use two sets on two phones, one person per phone, and line the recordings up in your editor (a clap at the start makes it easy).
Questions
Can I connect three mics to one phone?
Not with one Mini Mic Pro receiver; each takes two mics. For a third person, use a second set on a second device.
Do both mics record on separate channels?
No. Both mics mix into one mono track. For separate tracks, use two sets on two devices.
Will the mics pick up the other person’s voice?
A little. Each mic is tuned for its wearer’s voice, with noise reduction always on, so the person wearing it comes through strongest.
