The best mic setup for TikTok, Reels and Shorts
People will forgive shaky video. They won’t sit through audio they can’t hear. Here’s a phone mic setup that takes a minute and makes talking videos sound like you meant it.

Why audio matters for short video
On a talking video, the audio carries the message. Muddy or echoey sound makes people swipe, and it also hurts auto-captions, which work best on clean speech. A clip-on mic fixes both.
The setup
- Plug the receiver into your phone (USB-C, or Lightning on iPhone 14 and older).
- Hold the mic button until the light is solid green.
- Clip the mic to your collar, 6–8 inches below your mouth, on the side you’ll face.
- Indoors, use the foam cover. Outdoors, switch to the furry windscreen.
- Film, then watch it back with sound on before you post.
Record in your camera app, or in TikTok or Instagram?
The most reliable route is to film in your phone’s Camera app with the mic plugged in, then upload. In-app cameras usually use the plugged-in mic too, but do a five-second test first, especially after an app update.
Whichever you choose, disconnect Bluetooth earbuds before you film. They take over the mic input.
Content with two people
Mini Mic Pro comes with two mics and one receiver, so both people can wear one and record into the same phone. Both voices go into one track, so place both mics the same way and keep your voices at similar levels. More in the interview and podcast guide.
Before you post
- Listen with headphones, not the phone speaker.
- Echo you didn’t expect? Reverb mode may be on. The support page shows how to switch it off.
- Rustling? The mic is rubbing on clothing. See where to clip a lavalier mic.
- Muffled? The windscreen may be too tight or damp. Seat it loosely and keep it dry.
Questions
What mic do TikTokers use?
Most talking-head creators use a small wireless clip-on (lavalier) mic that plugs into their phone. It keeps the voice clear while they move around, without a mic in the shot.
Will a plug-in mic work in the TikTok and Instagram cameras?
Usually, yes. The most reliable option is to film in your phone’s Camera app and upload. Either way, do a quick test and disconnect Bluetooth earbuds first.
How do I stop wind noise outdoors?
Use the furry windscreen (a “dead cat”) instead of the foam cover, and clip the mic where your body shields it from the wind.
